Most women believe they have little or no hair damage, yet the reality is all women have hair damage and don’t realize it! Dove spokestylist and co-host of “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style,” Gretta Monahan says that women don’t have to change their habits to fight hair damage– there are simple solutions. In these trying economic times that have hit us all (I know I can’t be the only one feeling it!), I asked Greta to share some of these solutions that are affordable to everyone. Because really? How many of us have avoided going out simply because of a bad hair day?
Bad hair days are a result of hair damage. Preventing hair damage is the best place to start for better hair days.
1. Use a shampoo to protect and repair your hair depending on your hair type.
2. Towel dry hair with an old t-shirt before blow-drying.
3. Protect hair before heat styling with a heat protecting mist.
Daily wear and tear from hair accessories such as barrettes secured too tightly or friction caused by everyday ponytail holder use can lead to dry, rough hair and even damage.
1. Improve hair texture and manageability by applying a frizz-controlling cream. It will leave hair feeling easier to manage and less frizzy.
2. Avoid using headbands, barrettes or ponytail holders that pull hair too tightly.
The key to great looking hair is keeping it radiant. However, the color-treating process can cause damage leaving it dry, brittle and dull looking.
1. Color-protecting shampoos are designed to protect against color fade, recapture softness and maintain shine. Dove Color Therapy is formulated with a unique repairing serum that helps repair hair against the visual effects of damage caused by coloring.
2. Apply a UV barrier like Dove Heat Defense Mist to the hair to prevent against sun damage that can fade and dry out hair.
The Dove products Greta mentions can be found on drugstore.com or at your local drugstore or supermarket.

Great tips! thanks alot
i use one of those turban towels that i bought at marshals. really works well because its light weight and help to absorb the excess water. Hope my tip helps people out
I keep hearing that we need to protect our hair from the sun, yet there are not that many products out there that do the job! Would not it be wonderful if a large shampoo company, like Dove, came up with a shampoo/conditioner that had built-in SPF, or something similar to it? It would make it so much easier to take care or our hair!
In keeping with Anna’s comment on sun-protection for hair — what about wearing a hat? It not only protects your hair, but your scalp and the very fragile, vulnerable skin along the hairline and your ears from sun damage (a major spot for melanomas to appear). “Hat hair”, in my experience, is easier to correct (re-style) than trying to fix damaged hair.
thanks for the suggestions!!
i LOVE dove products: affordable and just as good as a lot of other more expensive stuff
Suzy, the best solution is the most simple one
i gotta go buy a nice hat that goes with all of my outfits now
Wonderful suggestions to help fight hair damage. I love the idea of drying my hair with an old T-shirt instead of a towel!
I have alot of damage from putting my long hair in a pony tail- it breaks off the hair and I have to use a serum to smooth it down. I like the serums from Garnier.
-Avoid using headbands, barrettes or ponytail holders that pull hair too tightly-
Oops, I guess I do that too much, explaining why my hair always goes crazy!
Nice tips; they are definitely helpful!
A runner for years
I’ve got a drawer-full of tees,
who knew they’d save my hair!?!
and tame my frizz-ies!
I’m trying that tip today!
I have recently started using the dove shampoo and conditioners. They are great. i started reading about the pony talis with berets. I have that problem. My hair will break so bad. Is there another way to keep your hair up besides using pony tail holders? I do use the butterfly clips but they are so uncomfertable. I find my self cleaning out my brush every two days. Thank goodness I have thick hair. I even put my hair up every morning to make my husbands lunches, I cook his lunches and alott of times he takes burritoes. has any girls out there had a problem with hair in the food? I try to make sure it does not happen maybe I need to cook with a hair nett. I beg him not to share his burritoes with anyone I would hate that kind of imberesment.LOL I have a cousin in law that has always pulled her hair back realy tight with rubberbands , and it seems that she has lost alott of hair even to were it looks like she is going bald. Could this be the cause? she is only 20.
Why use an old t-shirt.. fibers in a terry-cloth towel can rough up your hair. I did not know that . My towel is made of cotton. And so are my t- shirts so is there a difference?
I love the Dove products they make my hair so soft and shiny~When I curl it it actually stays in
Deb, That is what I think , and the goog part is that dove is farely cheap. I can also go almost any were and get it.
