Here on A Girl’s Gotta Spa! we’re going to be featuring more and more men’s grooming reviews and tips because we all know that guy’s often go to their wives and girlfriends for skin care advice (whether they admit it or not!) Since I am a big fan of manscaping, yeah TMI but whatev (!), let’s start off with some grooming tips from Jay Anthony Valadez, barber and stylist for Remington.
When shaving either your arms, legs, chest or, um, groin, it’s often better to just shave where hair shouldn’t be growing or trim overgrown areas rather than go for total hair removal. It’s ridiculous if you look like a gorilla, but if you take it down to nothing, you get itchy stubble, it gets irritated. Just clean it up for a nice, clean, fresh look. That’s why they call it manscaping.
· The above rule does not apply to back hair. In that case, total removal is the way to go.
· Don’t worry about the myth that hair grows back thicker after shaving. If that were true, every bald guy would be shaving his scalp.
· People notice when you’re well-groomed, head-to-toe, but once you start grooming, you have to commit to maintaining the look. A smart strategy: neaten things up in the shower every 10-14 days to avoid getting too grizzly, while also reducing the amount of clean up.
· After shaving body parts not used to seeing a razor, shower and use a lotion that’s oil-free and alcohol-free.
· Waxes work well, but they can be painful and cost $50 or more just for your back. Products such as Remington’s new BHT-600, a body + back groomer, won’t leave you screaming in pain, can be used in the shower for easy cleanup and cost just $39.99.
· Clean your shaving equipment after each use to prevent bacteria from building up.
· Yes, some people might snicker, but consider this: bodybuilders and swimmers have done this for years, and your grooming will help you get a better tan while also keeping you from getting quite so stinky during workouts. It has to be a personal choice, you have to be self-confident. The first time is always the hardest. When people see how good you look, they’ll start doing it, too.

What could be better than this new “manscaping” craze? Finally guys are realizing masculinity and grooming are not mutually exclusive! The tip about moisturizing just-shaven skin is especially great! One of our stylists recently wrote about a surge in male clients at our salons in the post, “Welcome Curly Guys,” so we’re hoping that means more guys are focusing on their hair, too! Great post!

lol, im not too big on manscaping, but some guys definitely need it. I am pretty happy if guys around me remember to use deodorant and to shave on daily basis
Anna S. - August 21st, 2009 at 12:04 pmHubby just got into manscaping, not too long ago… I LOVE it — and so does he, now — in the beginning, he went nearly smooth and itched like crazy as it grew back! Now, he leaves it more of a “Don Johnson/Miami Vice” type stubble length and there’s no itching and is very easy to maintain…
Suzy - August 21st, 2009 at 12:16 pmIt’s a great idea to use the shaver in the shower. My hubby has been waxed a few times, but hates the breakout after the waxing.
Jennifer C. - August 22nd, 2009 at 10:49 amI LOVE this new term!
It is hip and it is new—
So, now on my computer,
all my guy’s pics are in “manscape view”!
Okay, I’m kidding, but I just think ‘manscaping’ such a clever term. This would be a GREAT article to leave laying casually around the gym…but I’m not sure the guys who are impersonating Yetis would ‘get’ it!
Daphne - August 22nd, 2009 at 3:14 pmI can’t imagine any of the guys I know worrying about “manscaping” too much!
