Winter Skin Care DIY

Shannon Smyth
DIY Skin Care Recipes via @agirlsgottaspa #skincare #beauty #DIY From your head to your toes, winter conditions are no fun for your skin. Not only does dry skin look unhealthy, it can be really uncomfortable, too. Did you know that everything you need to save your skin from winter is as close as your pantry or refrigerator? Below are some excellent DIY skin care recipes from Dr. Susan Stuart a board certified dermatologist from La Jolla, California. Avocado Mask An avocado mask is perfect for dry skin that may become very irritated in the winter. It is easy to make: mash the flesh of avocado with a fork, add a touch of extra-virgin olive oil, and apply this smooth, fragrant mixture onto your face. “This nourishing mask will supply your skin with a whole range of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and softening agents to fight winter dryness,” says Dr. Stuart. We've also included avocado in our DIY Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment and DIY Avocado Hair & Face Mask. Avocado Oil can be found in A Girl's Gotta Spa! Energizing Citrus Salt Scrub, too. Sweet Almond Body Scrub Almonds are packed full of nutrients like vitamin E, magnesium, and healthy monounsaturated fats. These compounds make them nourishing to your body inside and out. Try this recipe to exfoliate and moisturize your skin. -1 cup brown sugar -1/2 cup almond oil -2 tsp honey -1 tsp pure vanilla extract Mix all ingredients together in a shatter-proof bowl. In the shower or tub, massage the scrub into your skin in circular motions (after washing your skin with soap), concentrating on rough or dry areas of the skin. Rinse with warm water, allowing the residual layer of almond oil to remain on the skin. Pat dry. Chocolate Face Mask Once regarded as a bane to our health, new research has shown that dark chocolate is healthy—and not just to eat. Compounds found in chocolate can actually benefit the skin when applied topically. -1/3 cup cocoa powder -1/4 cup honey -2 Tbsp cream or plain yogurt or sour cream -3 tsp oats (old-fashioned or quick-cooking) Place all ingredients into a blender, and blend until smooth. Apply to clean, dry skin and leave on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Pat dry. (I still eat a lot of dark chocolate, though.) Apple Vinegar Foot Soak -1 part apple vinegar -2 parts water Mix ingredients and soak for 30 minutes for hydrating new-like feet. Don't worry about the smell, as it will do wonders for cracked, rough, smelly feet! Static hair Coconut oil Rub a small amount of coconut oil between the palms of your hand and lightly pat down the top of your head. "Just the tiny bit of moisture will tame fly-aways and hydrate tresses without leaving hair greasy looking," says Dr. Stuart. Rough elbows and heels -Fresh figs -Hardened coconut oil (optional if you choose to make a more aggressive scrub). -Sugar Take ripe figs and mash or blend then in a bowl. Add coconut oil. This mixture will gently exfoliate, as the fig seeds will lightly clean and remove dead skin. According to Dr. Stuart, "Coconut oil is highly nutritious and moisturizing. Make sure the coconut oil is not melted. Place in fridge if you have to solidify, because if you are like me and prefer more exfoliation, add some sugar to this and create a dry scrub. Once this touches your skin, the coconut oil and sugar will melt." Apply while you're in the bath tub or shower and be careful as it may cause a slippery surface. Vanilla Lip Scrub -2 parts sugar -1 part olive oil -vanilla extract to taste This scrub will get rid of rough, dead skin on and around the lips. No one wants chapped lips where you can see the lines under your lip color, so this scrub is perfect! Also see our DIY Lip Scrub recipe. Loved these DIY skin care recipes? Favorite Facial Masks - Makeup Wars

Shannon Smyth
Makeup Wars! Favorite Facial Masks via @agirlsgottaspa When it comes to skin care, I am very picky with what I put on my face. Since there's no hiding imperfections should a reaction to a product happen, I always do my research on ingredients and check out my fellow beauty blogger reviews. One of my favorites types of skin care product are facial masks. Maybe it's just me, but I love the feeling of rejuvenating my skin. Some of my favorite facial masks are: Renee Rouleau Triple Berry Smoothing Peel: Hands down, this is my absolute favorite chemical exfoliant mask. By chemical, I mean smoothing fruit AHA's, BHA's and enzymes. It smells insanely delicious and leaves your skin with an amazing glow. Sundari Gotu Kola and Asparagus Mask: This is a "tingling" type of mask and targets all skin types. It has a gel consistency, to which you add an antioxidant-rich oil and stir before applying. I love it. Freeman Charcoal & Black Sugar Facial Polishing Mask: I still get acne at 40 years old, which is no fun. This MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator dupe is the perfect way to use a physical exfoliant that uses charcoal to target impurities. Sometimes I get carried away using this around my nose and chin to target blackheads. Natural Facial Mask by Ashieda: Paper masks seem to be all the rage lately. Despite my scary appearance wearing the mask, the collagen-infused mask plumped my skin to perfection. Gail also loves paper masks - check out her reviews of Perfective Ceuticals and Kaunis. Bernard Cassiere Chocolate Mousse Mask: Unless you can make it to The Spa at The Hotel Hershey, this mention is basically a tease. Bernard Cassiere only sells this product in the US at this spa. This highly decadent mousse is whipped to perfection, will make you daydream of a trip down a chocolate stream then swimming in a chocolate fountain, while revealing a brighter complexion. Age-Reversing Wine Mask Good for: All skin types In much the same way that red wine is anti-aging from the inside out, the antioxidants in red wine (including resveratrol) make it a great anti-aging skincare treatment when applied topically. Mixed with egg whites to tighten fine lines and retinol-rich egg yolks, this mask takes happy hour to a whole new level—albeit, one in which you may not want to leave your house. 1 egg 1 egg yolk 3 tablespoons red wine Whisk all ingredients together until well combined. Use a pastry brush to apply a thin layer to your face, neck and décolleté, avoiding your eye area. Let dry before washing off with warm water and a washcloth. Roasted Watermelon Gazpacho #recipe from @thebeautybean1 via @agirlsgottaspa #skincare #food Roasted Watermelon Gazpacho Vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, nut-free Lycopene, found in cooked tomatoes and watermelon, helps defend against sun damage—and might even help both prevent and treat skin cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Keep this gazpacho in your refrigerator all summer long for a skin-healing soup that’s as refreshing as it is healing. Serves 2 to 4 3 vine tomatoes, chopped 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 3 cups watermelon, seeded 1 clove garlic 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1/4 cup roasted almonds 1/2 tablespoon sweet smoked paprika 1 medium cucumber, peeled and divided Salt, to taste Cayenne pepper (optional) 2 tablespoons diced sweet onion On medium heat, sauté tomatoes in the oil until fork-tender. Best Products For Frizzy Hair

Shannon Smyth

Bain de Terre smoothing #haircare products. If you have frizzy hair, you need these!

Humidity can wreak havoc on any hairstyle. That's why smoothing and anti-frizz hair care products are always on my vanity. Unruly hair has no place in my beauty regimen! Bain de Terre are a professional line of hair care that previously could only be found in salons. Since the launch of Loxabeauty.com, an authorized retailer for salon brands, there's easier access to them without the hassle of driving to the salon to restock. And yes, product diversion is a real thing, so if you've ever seen them anywhere other than the salon (like at a drugstore), they're not an authorized re-seller. The Bain de Terre products I've been using are their Sleek & Smooth shampoo and conditioner, Rise n' Shine Volumizing Foam, Recovery Complex Anti-Frizz Shine Serum and Jasmine Blow Dry Smoothing Creme. As you can see, I take frizzy hair seriously. Bain de Terre Sleek & Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner #review #haircare #antifrizz #arganoil #monoi Bain de Terre's Sleek & Smooth shampoo and conditioner smell divine. We all love when our hair smells lucious, but oftentimes that fragrance dissipates within hours. Aside from my hair being silky smooth as this set enhanced and restored my hair health, the botanical scent lasted literally all day. Better yet, I was constantly getting the "Ooh, your hair smells good!" compliments each time I used it. Compliments never get old. The shampoo and conditioner are paraben free and color-safe, which is great for those of us who color our hair and don't want to see it fade quickly. Bain de Terre Volumizing Foam #haircare #arganoil #monoi Back when I visited Zotos Professional's headquarters where I talked to Mike Petrizzi about how to prevent hair color fading, one of the hairstylists explained to me that although I have A LOT of hair, it is naturally fine hair and this is why I constantly battle losing volume. Sure, I could tease it out like the 80's to give it some lift, but typically within the hour my hair falls flat, not to mention the unflattering frizzy hair is quite an eyesore. I could put an endless supply of hair spray in my hair, but it never makes a difference. Baine de Terre's Rise n' Shine Volumizing Foam is lightweight so that it gives you real volume, and utilizes white willow bark, a natural source of resin, that builds body and enhances hair’s volume for added fullness. It's great for all hair types and doesn't make it greasy. This product also has argan and monoi oils, so it conditions hair and I get the volume without the frizz.

Bain de Terre Blow Dry Smoothing Cream #review #antifrizz #smoothing #haircare

You most likely put your hair through the ringer daily from blow drying to flat ironing to curling. The hair breakage that thermal stylers cause creates much of the frizz that you see. It is so important to use a hair treatment that will protect your strands from heat damage while reducing frizz and moisturing your hair. The Bain de Terre Jasmine Blow Dry Smoothing Creme does all of these things PLUS it has a UVA/UVB protectant, as well. Skin isn't the only thing that needs protection from the sun, as UV rays cause hair color fading. Bain de Terre Shine Serum #review #haircare #antifrizz Lastly, I use the Recovery Complex Anti-Frizz Shine Serum. This serum is alcohol-free and color-safe and contains argan and monoi oils. It is weightless, and despite the oils and silicone, it's not greasy. It leaves your hair silky smooth and frizz-free. I've used it both on damp hair before styling and on days when the humidity is wicked, on my dry hair as well. You only need a pea-sized amount to get the job done for shoulder length hair. All of the anti-frizz hair care mentioned from Bain de Terre are paraben free, color-safe, contain argan and monoi oils, have a botanical fragrance that lasts and ends your battle with frizz. Believe me, I live by the water, where humidity is no joke. If you haven't tried these for yourself yet, I highly recommend them! If you'd used any of these products, I'd love to hear about your experience in the comments. When shopping for Bain de Terre on Loxabeauty, use code FiveOff at checkout to get $5 off a minimum purchase of $20 on Bain de Terre hair care products. (Discount code expires on July 31, 2014. How to Prevent hair color fading #AGEbeautiful Aside from, "What is the perfect hair color for me?" the second most asked question is, "How do I prevent my hair color from fading?" I asked him to lend a few tips from how to prevent hair color fading to explaining the difference between permanent and demi permanent hair color.

Preventing Varicose Veins

Shannon Smyth

Preventing varicose veins (ugh these run in my family!)

Varicose veins are those pesky, enlarged blood vessels that are often squiggly and discolored in appearance. They can form anywhere but most commonly occur on the legs. This vascular condition occurs in half of the U.S. adult population and is most common in women. With millions of people developing these veins it is important to know what causes them and how they can be prevented.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins and the smaller scale condition known as spider veins occur when there is an increased pressure in the veins that weakens the vessel walls over time. It may even occur when vein walls are deprived of hormones or nutrients. Although it occurs in all adult populations, women, pregnant woman, and the elderly are most susceptible to this condition.

How Can Varicose Veins Be Prevented?

In most cases varicose veins do not pose as a serious risk to your health. However, in worst case scenarios, this condition can lead to serious circulation problems due to blood being unable to travel through the clots in varicose veins. The malfunction of these veins means that less blood is transferred to the heart which in turn can pose as a serious health concern. Most of the time, however, the clotting in varicose veins just leads to symptoms like: swelling, itching, burning, tenderness, aching, and of course unattractive looking veins. While these veins can often be inevitable due to hereditary genes or uncontrollable circumstances, there are various methods of prevention such as:

  • Avoiding Too Much Time on Your Feet: Excessive standing puts enduring loads of pressure on your feet and legs, which can lead to blood pooling within your veins. To avoid this, be sure to relax your legs from time to time and elevate them above your heart when you can to improve circulation. Also, it is important to always have a good posture anytime you are resting or standing, as this also a great way to improve circulation.

  • Exercising Regularly: Through exercise, the entire circulatory system can be improved while reducing overall high blood pressure. These two components are excellent to improve when it comes to preventing varicose veins.

  • Living a Healthy Lifestyle: Aside from exercise, it is also important to maintain a healthy weight, as this decreases the work load put on your veins. Additionally, it is important to stay away from smoking and high-estrogen birth control pills, as these can diminish the health of your veins.

  • Wearing Proper Clothing: Avoid tight clothing and footwear to improve circulation. It has also been observed that compression hose can help soothe and prevent varicose veins.

When it comes to the bottom line, any improvement in health or circulation can be viewed as a preventative measure for varicose veins. If this information got to you too late, there are various treatments available for the treatment of varicose veins.

Aging Hair: Q & A with Marina Azizova of Zotos Professional

Shannon Smyth

Q & A with Marina Azizova, Director of Research and Development of Zotos Professional regarding some of the ways our hair ages. Something you'll want to read! #haircareMarina Azizova, Director of Research and Development at Zotos Professional

If there is anything that I learned while in Darien, Connecticut recently visiting Zotos Professionals' headquarters, it's that the signs of aging are not just visible via your skin.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Marina Azizova, Director of Research and Development at Zotos Professional to talk about what happens to hair as we age and how their new AGEbeautiful home hair color and hair care collection helps to combat these signs of aging. Marina has been with Zotos for 15 years working with aerosol, hair color and as part of the hair care lead development of technology.

I asked Marina what the most exciting part of being a chemist at Zotos has been and she told me it was the technology of anti-aging hair care because it covers such a wide range of people. The biggest misconception, and it is often perpetuated by the beauty industry, is that anti-aging when it comes to hair, simply means combating gray hair. This isn't true.

Lipids in your hair is important (moisture, flexibility and shine) and as we age, we lose it. You may have noticed your hair getting drier, more brittle and of course, going gray. The reason your hair begins to gray is it loses melanin and without it, loses UV protection. Most of the signs of aging hair begins at age 30, however, in your 20's is when keratin production in your hair begins to decrease. By 40, sebum production decreases which lends to a dry scalp and dry hair and even visibly thinning hair. Now you may notice that your hair is dry, but your scalp is the opposite - super oily. This is because if your scalp was always normal to dry, it then becomes oily in your older years, but if your scalp was always oily, it becomes significantly drier as you age. Either way, the result is still the same despite your scalp being oily or dry in your 50's because hair becomes coarser as we age, making it virtually impossible for hair to absorb sebum and remain hydrated. Unfortunately, when hair is drier, it also doesn't move the same.

As I spoke with Marina, the lightbulb literally went off for me. I'm soon-to-be 40 and I've definitely noticed these things, yet NO ONE ever talks about this. I've never once seen a hair care commercial that addresses these issues and that's one of the main reasons I'm supportive of AGEbeautiful. AGEbeautiful hair color not only addresses wiry gray and gray hair, but dullness, dryness and thinning hair. It contains Melanin, Keratin Peptide, silk protein, and Vitamin E to replenish hair with the essential components that are lost with aging.

AGEbeautiful is available exclusively at Sally Beauty and is available in permanent and demi-permanent liquid hair color. They also have a full hair care line, as well.

What are some of the signs of aging you've noticed with your hair? Leave a comment and let me know!
