Note To Self: Dream Big

Shannon Smyth4 comments
A Girl's Gotta Spa! 8th blogiversary! I shuffled a few pieces of loose leaf papers together on my desk and stapled them. I opened to the first page, put pen to paper and began to write out my short story, along with illustrations (my "books" always had illustrations.) The first page would always say, "Written by Shannon Crino" in perfect cursive penmanship. Then, dressed in my neatly pressed green plaid St. James school uniform, I would bring it to the front of the class and place it next to the other books my fifth grade teacher had organized for our daily reading time. I'd then sit and eagerly await my classmates to take one of my books and read them. I'd patiently watch their expressions as they would finger through the pages, and when they'd look up, their eyes meeting mine, they'd smile. That sealed the deal for me when it came to writing. I knew I wanted to be putting words on pages that meant something to someone. A way I could resonate with them. For the rest of my life. Later that year, as one of my newly written books sat on the coffee table in my parent's den, my father remarked, "Your illustrations and books are ordinary. There's nothing that stands out that makes them amazing. They're just..." (and I hung onto each crippling word) "plain." I was crushed. And with that critical statement from my father, I put down the pen. Approximately 4 years later, during my obsession with Rat (let's be clear--the rock band, not the rodent), I secretly began writing in a notebook crafting stories of how Warren found me so amazing and Robin was madly in love with my best friend, Tiffany. One notebook turned into ten, the pages filled with soap opera-like strife of love and betrayal. I would spend countless hours in my room putting the words that flooded my head onto paper. The notebooks would go into my closet each night to be hidden away from prying eyes. Once the obsession with Rat was over, so was the story writing. Eventually I just considered them clutter, and told myself no one would ever want to read about how a rock star fell in love with an average girl. I tossed them all out and put down the pen once again. During my final year attending Rhode Island College for my Bachelors in Psychology, my parents filed for divorce. Shortly after, the relationship with my boyfriend of 3 years ended as well.  The dusty pen found its way back into my hands and I took my sorrows out on paper. Once I became a wife and mother, it would get put to the wayside for many years...although instead of forgetting about it, I would yearn for it. I would lean more on what others thought I should be doing, all the while knowing that writing was what I was meant to be doing. Dream Big On October 24, 2005 I took the leap and pressed Publish on A Girl's Gotta Spa! I've never thought of the blog name as just a title. It was (and is) an action phrase, a verb...hence why there is an exclamation point on the end of it (that many print and online publications seem to always leave out.) I grew up in the Calgon, take me away era and A Girl's Gotta Spa! has the same intention. Additionally, it is not Girls Gotta Spa (and to be honest, when people say that, it's like hearing nails on a chalkboard to me.) That indicates that "other girls" need to spa. "A" indicates singularity. And in that singularity, it means YOU. Girl's versus Girls because the apostrophe indicates possession. In the end, each part of A Girl's Gotta Spa! means that you, essentially, are taking ownership over pampering your mind and body. Blogging has been the best thing I have ever done for myself. It has been my creative outlet, it helped me create an income when there was none, it helped me make contacts and develop relationships outside of my tiny town in the Poconos.  Not only has my writing helped me to resonate with others, it helped you to resonate with me. Solving your skin care woes became my passion, and arming you with information about product hype encouraged me to always get to the bottom of those so called "claims." Long or short, each post I write, I carefully think through, like I am speaking with a trusted friend. Just in case you don't know, today I celebrate EIGHT years of beauty blogging. About one year (almost to the day) into blogging, my life would once change again when a NYC PR firm would approach me to work for them. And as I detailed in my About Time post, I doubted myself and my abilities (go read that post, it's really good!)  As we always say in Psychology, fear and doubt come from trauma in our childhood. I truly believe that one moment where my father made me feel like I wasn't good enough set the stage in my mind (along with countless other criticisms from people along the way), that I could never dream big. To that, I now say, "You are only confined by the walls you build for yourself." Instead of allowing the words of others to build me up, I instead put these things called dreams in a box and put them away as the words of others would tear me down. During these eight years of beauty blogging I've been in countless beauty magazines (online and print), I've been on TV, I've spoken at beauty industry conferences, I've been a mentor to new beauty bloggers, I've worked for a top beauty PR firm, I've become a social media consultant, I've helped launch small brands and I've helped large brands grow traction...I've become a mom to four wonderful boys, gotten a divorce, got remarried to my very best friend and finally began to feel comfortable in my own skin. Most of all, I have confidence in my abilities and who I am. Now, in year eight, we have a team of writers (all talented women, in fact), but while they write (and I continue to edit and do reviews too), I'm beginning to shift my focus to something I've wanted to do for a very long time. Have my own bath and body line. (You can check out our Indiegogo campaign.) I'm working very hard behind the scenes (YOU GUYS it is SO much work), but I feel just as much passion about it as I do about writing. While there are many (as in countless) days where I get down on myself and feel like I can't do it or that no one will buy it (except maybe my mom and mother-in-law), I keep reminding myself to dream big. I keep bringing myself back to be that 11 year old girl who desired to dream big and do what she loved. And so, with that, I want to clearly tell you that if you have dreams and aspirations--go for them! Don't let the criticisms of others become obstacles. Don't doubt yourself. Know your worth. Be your own inspiration. Respect your talents. But most of all, dream big and find your way to those dreams no matter how long it takes. Because IT WILL happen. eSalon Offers Salon Quality Hair Color at Home

Shannon Smyth
eSalon Home Hair Coloring Kit The scenario: Your bank account gives you a firm NO to getting your next hair color done at your favorite salon, so you head down to your local drugstore and browse the home hair color aisle. All of the models on the package look amazing. You SO want hair color like that. You grab a few locks of your hair and try to find the perfect "before" match on the back of the box so that you can accurately predict what color your hair will likely ending up looking like "after." On occasion you find yourself asking complete strangers, "Do you think this hair color will look good on me?" To which they usually smile, nod and say, "Yes," only to quickly leave the aisle so that you won't ask them anymore questions that you'll expect them to be an expert at. Do you recognize yourself? If you do, then eSalon is for you. It's the perfect blend of salon grade hair coloring products, expert colorist guidance and having the ability to do your hair at home for a fraction of the cost. Intrigued? I was and had the opportunity to try it for myself. Personalized Home Hair Color You begin at eSalon.com and create an account. To begin it asks you a series of questions and shows you different shades and hues of hair color to choose as your current hair color and with each click, it changes on the model. You then click the hair color you are aiming for. You can also upload a current photo of yourself with any additional information you wish to relay to the expert colorist assigned to you. I stated that I like to have a darker hair color during the colder months. Each order includes: Custom hair color, developer, hair color accessories, and personalized instructions (I liked that it had my name on the instructions showing that this was not a cookie-cutter hair kit.) After I submitted all of the details asked, I received an email that a colorist had reviewed what I selected and based on the picture I submitted, changed my order to meet my needs. I'll be honest, I was skeptical. I'm usually a good judge of hair color for myself. My kit arrived shortly after, which by the way, is only $19.99. There were some extras in the kit so that as a blogger I can relay to you how those products worked, however they are not typical for each order. The instructions were clear on how to use this kit, but seemed a little overwhelming at first (no, it's not as easy as slapping on gloves and putting the color in your hair.) First you apply their Stain Guard--which is a brilliant idea by the way--around your hair line, on the tips and outer part of your ears and along your neck line. The stain guard is a petroleum and oil (coconut, sunflower seed) and beeswax mix. To help you achieve the perfect at home hair color, they send you clips to section out your hair. After putting your hair into 4 sections, you go through and apply to the roots in each section and re-clip. You then mix a second bottle of hair color and apply to each section at a time using hand over hand application. Each portion is timed, and it comes with a timer to help you not over-process your hair. The final step was also unusual in that it requires you to get into the shower, add water to your second bottle (with the leftover hair color still in it), unclip all of your hair and then apply the remainder to your hair and massage in for about 2 minutes. You then rinse until the color runs clear, and then use the eSalon color-safe shampoo and conditioner. The kit also comes with a Stain Remover so that if you did get color on your skin, you can easily wipe it off. The Stain Guard worked for me, so I had nothing further to wipe away. When I first dried my hair, it looked the same to me (medium brown with golden highlights.) So I asked my husband to take a picture of me and to my surprise, and delight, my hair was the EXACT color I had hoped for: a nice dark, rich brown. I was so happy! Here is the picture I submitted to the colorist (and also my hair before) and then the picture of my hair after. Sorry that the picture is blurry, my camera was not cooperating that day. Before and After with eSalon Hair Color eSalon also offers you the opportunity to call in and speak to an expert colorist as well, which is great during a hair coloring emergency. They also have their own bottles of color-safe shampoo and conditioner, color enhancing treatment and an argan hair serum. I found that the clips served another purpose as well, it helps me to section my hair and dry it faster AND cut down on the frizz. I've been using them all of the time now. eSalon saves your custom color in your account making it easier to re-order. You can choose to subscribe to them sending you auto-shipments or simply do a one-time order. I am super excited about this and so thrilled with how my hair color turned out. I Found the Perfect Red Lip Color

Shannon Smyth
The Perfect Red Lip Never did I thought I would see that day when I would be able to say I'm wearing red lip color. Friends would tell me, "Try this one, it's best!" or "This type of red is more your color," only to be greatly disappointed. I began to think red just wasn't for me and would instead would be green with envy over those who could pull it off. I'm just too pale, it brings out the ruddiness in my skin, it makes me look like a clown... believe me, I've given every excuse there is. Until AVON sent me their newest lip crayon for Fall. In two words: holy crap. OK, better words: stunning, vibrant, youth-enhancing, brilliant, powerful. The Ultra Color Lip Crayon ($8) in Reddy for Me, is truly the red for me. It is jumbo in size, glides on smooth and instantly brightens my face. It's not too bright, not too matte, and doesn't bring out the unevenness in my skin tone. While this new lip color is said to have moisturizing shea butter and Vitamin E, I did find it to be drying. Does it stop me from wearing it religiously? Nope. Without a lip pencil, the lip color does wear off (inner part of your lip first) after the usual eating/drinking. However, I found that if I use a nude lip liner and fill in my lips with it then apply the Ultra Color Lip Crayon over it, it has much better staying power. To combat the dryness, I just use my Beau Bain Mint Mojito Lip Scrub prior to application. The Ultra Color Lip Crayon does have mica for the sparkle. That's really the only thing I'm on the fence about. Sometimes the mica looks like large glitter on my lips, and at 39 years old, makes me feel childish. However, sometimes what I think and what people say are two different things and everyone continues to rave about how this red looks on me. Mica lips and all.

Nutrisystem Food

Shannon Smyth
@Nutrisystem Food review #sponWhen I began my Nutrisystem journey back in July, I was worried about the taste of Nutrisystem food. Would it taste like cardboard? Would chicken taste like chicken and beef like beef? Would the frozen meals taste like TV dinners? Needless to say, I'm sure if you are reading this post, you are wondering the same thing. What I can tell you, is that I am OBSESSED with their breakfasts--double chocolate muffin, cinnamon roll, granola cereal, egg omelets. My mornings have never been more flavorful. I like that for pantry meals, I am able to go a la cart, which meant I chose foods I knew I would eat (and happily did so!) I am OBSESSED with their desserts. I honestly feel that Nutrisystem desserts allow you to be indulgent, but within reason. A red velvet whoopie may be tiny, but it is just enough sweetness to conquer your cravings. The ice cream sandwich tastes like the real deal. The chocolate chip pudding? Decadent! All perfectly portioned, but with the help of the Nutrisystem app on my phone, I'm able to better understand how many calories I'm taking in per item. I also read the labels (as should you!) I've gained a good understanding of carbs, sodium, calories, etc. this way too. I am OBSESSED with their protein shakes. Being a chocolate addict, the creamy chocolate shake is my favorite, but Coffee and Strawberry are delicious also. Now that I've been drinking these protein shakes for 3 months, it is definitely a habit and I find myself simply putting them together each morning without another thought. The dinners and lunches have their pros and cons, but they do seem to balance each other out. The chicken pot pie is YUM. The various lunch melts that only need 1 minute in the @Nutrisystem Chicken parm #sponmicrowave taste like you bought them fresh at the store. The flame broiled hamburger is actually really good, although it's definitely not as substantial as a real burger (but that's the point, right?) My main con is that I'm not a huge pasta or sauce person. Most of the meals are doused in some sort of sauce. But that is just my personal dislike. I do tend to scrape off most of the sauce...and the food is good otherwise. So far my weight continues to remain stagnant at 169.5 for the last few months. Admittedly, there have been times when I've eaten normal food off the diet...however it was not indulgently so. In fact, I feel like Nutrisystem has taught me exactly what I've been looking for this whole time in understanding portion size, and how to balance out eating. When I've been at an event or restaurant, I've dove into veggies and meat and tried to avoid bad carbs and sweets. And while at first I was super upset that the pounds were not dropping off, the inches have! I wore a dress to a wedding that I haven't put on in over a year...and I almost fell over seeing myself in it and the fact that it was LOOSE! The inch loss has been noticeable in my pants and shirts, which makes me super happy. I'm still trying to wrap my head around being a certain number on the scale, yet not actually looking like that number. What questions do you have about Nutrisystem food? I'd be happy to answer them! Shades of Pink That Work For Dark Skin Tones

Gail Lewis
The Perfect Pink Lip Colors for Dark Skin Tones I love wearing pink lip color. Bright, natural, glossy, matte...it doesn't matter, I just love different shades and textures of pink lip color. I just wish pink lip color loved me back that easily. Finding a pink lip color that works on darker skin tones is not always a simple process.  Even with help, I have ended up going home with shades of pinks that looked ashy, clownish, like I had a weird mouth disease or like I was on death's door.  So after trying a ton of different shades and textures of pink lip color, I thought I would share my favorites just in case you have a similar skin tone and face similar issues. My favorite natural, matte lip color is NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dolce Vita.  I positively love the smooth, matte texture of this lip pencil.  The coverage is amazing and the color is really pretty on my skin tone and does not look at all ashy.  I love wearing this lip pencil during the day with just a bit of mascara or at night with a smoky eye. nars-dolce-vita-velvet-matte-lip-pencil For a bright pink matte lip color I am addicted to NARS Velvet Matte Pencil in Never Say Never.  The texture is the same as the Dolce Vita Lip Pencil, but I love wearing this color when I want to get more playful with my makeup.  It's a bright pink that does not end up looking clownish on my skin tone. nars-velvet-matte-lip-pencil-never-say-never For a full coverage pink lip color that's more of a natural pink, but glossier than the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, I adore Tarte Maracuja Divine Shine Full Coverage Lipstick in Cherish.  This lipstick is a liquid lipstick that has a creamy texture and almost feels as lightweight as a gloss, but with more intense color and coverage.  The color is gorgeous on my lips and I love the minty, cooling sensation that this lip color leaves on my lips. tarte-divine-shine-full-coverage-liquid-lipstick-cherish My favorite natural pink lip gloss at the moment is Bite Beauty Honey Lip Laquer in Chianti.  The consistency of this lip laquer is much like that of honey, very thick but uber moisturizing and shiny.  I have actually worn this lip laquer to hot yoga and after 90 minutes of intense sweating my lips were still moisturized with just a hint of color. bite-beauty-chianti-lip-laquer Although I absolutely adore the lip colors that I've listed here, I am always open to suggestions and would love to hear from you about the shades of pinks that have worked for you.  I am currently on the hunt for a bright pink lip gloss and would appreciate any suggestions you might have! Beauty Blogger's Favorite Fall Lip Colors

Shannon Smyth2 comments
Wondering which lip colors are on trend this Fall? Some of the top beauty bloggers (yes, including me!) decided to get on camera and dish about their favorites.

Beauty Blogger's Favorite Fall Lip Colors

Beauty Blogger's Favorite Fall Lip Colors 2013Yes, that's me standing in the woods! And how can you not be distracted watching Clumps of Mascara's gorgeous daughter trying to snag her lip gloss?

Everyone has some great lip color picks! My favorite lip color for Fall is Three Custom Color's Lip Gloss Pot in Simply Beautiful. It looks brown-ish in the pot, but I assure you that it's a neutral color and looks great on all skin tones. I apply with a lip brush and you only need a small amount to make your lips pop. Three Custom also sells this color in a lipstick, gloss and even as a cream blush.

Watch the video below and a big thank you to Phyrra for putting this together!

Our Favorite Lip Scrubs

Shannon Smyth1 comment
You go to apply your favorite lipstick, only to have your dry, peeling lips magnified by like 100. Your sexy pout is no longer so sexy. Been there, done that. Nothing adds more life and vitality to your lips than giving them the rub down with a good sugar scrub. We have our favorites, do you see yours among them?

Beau Bain Mint Mojito Lip Scrub

Beau Bain's lip scrubs rank high for me. My favorite is their Mint Mojito. I love it so much that I literally licked it off my lips post-scrub. While sugar, of course, does the scrubbing, shea butter, avocado oil and Vitamin E do the softening. Their scrub comes paired with a lip balm, which is great to apply before bed, or to wear when you simply want to keep your lips moisturized. LUSH Bubble Gum Lip Scrub Walking into a LUSH store is like driving without navigation...you are bound to get lost for HOURS. This deliciously scented lip scrub is another one that can be licked off without fear of ingesting anything nasty. Sugar and jojoba oil will take your lips to the next level of hydration.

Bliss Fabulips

Not so much into the whole "mint" lip scene? Bliss has Fabulips, which is a vanilla and orange flavor. The dirty work is done with almond and walnut shells, while jojoba seed and olive oils, shea and cocoa butters and vitamins A, C and E nourish. Red Velvet The Lip Scrub by Sara Happ Our lip scrub recommendations wouldn't be complete without The Lip Scrub from Sara Happ. She has so many decadent scents to choose from, like Red Velvet, Brown Sugar and Creme Brulee that it may be difficult not to hoard them all. (We promise we won't confront you about your "problem".) Sugar, jojoba and grape seed oils will get your pout pretty once again. Which lip scrub do you swear by?
