Erbaviva Organic Deodorant Review

Shannon Smyth
Discovered @erbaviva organic deodorants through @lillysbathcarry - check out the review on @agirlsgottaspa Mention "organic deodorant" and you may get a few raised eyebrows combined with some skepticism. People often wonder - Does organic deodorant smell weird? Is it strong enough? What exactly is it made of? I'm going to be straight up honest, I've never tried organic deodorant before simply because I didn't think it would have staying power. After talking with the owner of Lilly's Bathcarry one day, which in full transparency is an A Girl's Gotta Spa! retailer, she convinced me that I should give it a shot. She recommended erbaviva, saying it was the best she's ever used. Now that I've tried it myself, I'm kicking myself for not trying it sooner. Discovered @erbaviva organic deodorants through @lillysbathcarry - check out the review on @agirlsgottaspa I tried erbaviva Lemon & Sage Organic Deodorant and Jasmine & Grapefruit. Pictured is the travel size, which is 1 floz, but she also has full size, which is 3.4 floz. If you've never tried this type of deodorant before and are unsure, then I recommend going with the travel size because it is only $7, but lasts a good long time. Something I loved right away about erbaviva is that you don't need a degree to understand the ingredients, pure and simple - it's essential oils in organic grain alcohol. I'm not used to spritzing on my deodorant, so that took some getting used to, because you don't want to over do it (or under do it and smell bad.) I found that I only needed 3 spritzes for it to be effective enough for me. Also, a helpful tip - if you've just shaved, wait a little bit before spraying because the alcohol will sting. Fragrance-wise, I thought Lemon & Sage would be my favorite since I love lemon scents. Lemon & Sage smells good, a very clear and clean lemon mixed with an earthy sage aroma. However, Jasmine & Grapefruit became my go-to. I really like this floral-citrus combination. The scent is there for a few minutes, but then you don't notice it until... suddenly you're sweating in the heat of the day and boom. The scent is there as the ingredients are activated and working to prevent body odor. Perfect! I'm actually surprised at how much I liked this. You can find erbaviva at Lilly's Bathcarry for $7 and $20. I'd love to know if you experience trying organic deodorant for the first time was the same! Leave a comment! Dry Skin Solutions for Women Over 40

Sponsored by AmLactin: Review of AmLactin Skin Care products for those with dry skin via @agirlsgottaspa

We all know that getting older comes with pros and cons. Older and wiser (that's a definite), knowing who you are and what you want... and then all those lovely skin issues. Dark spots, wrinkles, and other fun skin ailments like eczema, psoriasis, and Keratosis Pilaris are exacerbated by dry skin. So what are those of us with aging skin to do? According to data from a 2015 national online survey of over one thousand U.S. women over the age of 18: Nearly two-thirds of U.S. women report that the older they get, the more difficult it is to keep their skin moisturized. (Yes, this is me.) U.S. women feel an average of six years older when their skin is dry and dull. (Ugh, me again.) 56% of women report being just as concerned about the signs of aging from the neck down as they are about the signs of aging on the face. (Truth.) Can you also relate to those statistics? I recently tried out AmLactin Skin Care's line of products that have been trusted by dermatologists for over 20 years. With its unique combination of exfoliating alpha-hydroxy acids and hydrating humectants, AmLactin moisturizers smooth away roughness to reveal smooth, healthy-looking skin. In this video I discuss AmLactin Ultra Hydrating Body Cream for my Keratosis Pilaris (a skin issue that I'm often embarrassed by), AmLactin Foot Cream, Moisturizing Body Lotion and my absolute fave, Cerapeutic Restoring Body Lotion. Customized Nexxus Hair Care at Sam's Club

Shannon Smyth15 comments

Sponsored by Mirum Shopper. All opinions are my own.

nexxus-youth-renewal-elixir Lately I've been on the hunt for products that aim to treat my skin and hair for the issues I'm having as I age (not just things to make me look younger.) Being in my 40's comes with a plethora of issues that are both as a result of my actions when I was younger (or inaction in terms of taking care of my skin and hair) and the normal course of getting older. Yay me. I've used Nexxus hair system products in the past and I've been really happen with the results. So when I learned that you can get a 3-product full size set from Sam's Club for just around $26, I was game to check it out. While Sam's Club may be associated with large bulk items, it's also a great place to generally save on items that you love. nexxus-sams-club There are 6 different sets of Nexxus products that you can choose from that include a shampoo, conditioner and hair treatment. Or if you don't want all of the same products from the same collection, you have the ability to choose 3 different Nexxus items for the same price through their customized regimen. For example, you could purchase the Color Assure Vibrancy Shampoo and Conditioner, but then select the Promend Split End Binding Cream. The 6 systems are: Emergencee Damage Recovery System: for weak and damaged hair Oil Infinite Frizz Defying System: for frizzy or unruly hair Diametress Luscious Volume System: for flat and fine hair Color Assure Vibrancy Retention System: for color treated hair Youth Renewal Radiance System: for fine and weakened hair Promend Split End Bonding System: for hair prone to split ends Nexxus Hair Care Customizable Regiment Pick 3 Sam s Club3 If you type in Nexxus in the search bar on the Sam's Club website, each system will show up, as well as a way to customize your set. Choosing begins with conditioner, then shampoo and then a hair treatment. For this review, I chose the Youth Renewal Radiance since my hair is weakened from coloring and heat styling my hair. And while I have a lot of hair giving it the appearance of being thick, it's actually pretty fine. Nexxus Youth Renewal Radiance Shampoo, Conditioner and Elixir smell and feel incredible. The only way I can describe the fragrance is like a creamy, comforting lotion. The texture of the 3 also align with this as well - most especially the Elixir, which is a white serum that is dispersed through a dropper. Nexxus Youth Renewal Radiance Shampoo and conditioner both have ingredients like coconut oil, hydrolyzed elastin, keratin, pearl and wheat protein. The Elixir is also enriched with liquid pearl and concentrated 100% pure elastin protein. After use, each strand feels plumped up, incredibly soft, hydrated and shiny. Something I noticed after using these products, is that my thermal brush grips my hair better without ripping and breaking any strands as I am drying my hair. This means frizziness has decreased considerably and breakage from styling is way down. My hair looks great and I really love this hair system. sams-club-savings There's definitely a Nexxus hair system to solve your hair woes, and to save $16 on a bundle, head over to Sam's Club website to create yours now! Leave a comment and let me know if you've tried any of these products from Nexxus yourself! Subscribe to A Girl’s Gotta Spa! beauty blog. Coloring Your Hair With Garnier Olia #MyOliaStory #Sponsored

Shannon Smyth

I'm sharing #MyOliaStory as part of a Garnier® sponsored series for Socialstars™. All opinions and hair color are my own.

Coloring your hair with Garnier Olia via @agirlsgottaspa #MyOliaStory #Sponsored

If you've been following #MyOliaStory for the past few months, then you know I've been dyeing my hair at home with Garnier® Olia every 6 weeks. This is the most consistent I have been in years, since I had stopped dyeing my hair all together during my pregnancies.

For some reason, my hair had become a very dark brunette during that time - which I can tell you is not my natural color, but I'm not entirely sure how it came to be. (Has this happened to anyone else??) I wanted to go back to a much lighter version of brown while retaining the look of it being natural. Coloring your hair with Garnier Olia via @agirlsgottaspa #MyOliaStory #Sponsored If you still haven't tried Garnier® Olia for yourself, let me tell you some of the things I have loved about using it: Olia is an ammonia-free hair dye - I love that even though my color is coming from a bottle, it certainly doesn't smell that way during the process.

The dye is powered by 60% oil - That means my hair is being nourished during coloring and won't end up dry and brittle 100% gray coverage - This girl has got grays, but I don't need anyone knowing that. Gray hair is tough, but I love that Olia completely covers them.

Hair feels soft and manageable - Sometimes dyeing your hair can result in it feeling like straw, but my hair feels really soft. Coloring your hair with Garnier Olia via @agirlsgottaspa #MyOliaStory #Sponsored I used Olia 6 1/2 .3 again as my shade, but instead of just doing my roots this time, I actually did my whole head. I was a little nervous about that, but I'm happy with how it came out.

Overall, I really like using Garnier® Olia and the fact that you can find it just about everywhere and it's affordable means that I know it is always accessible when I need to freshen up my color again. I think in September I'll go back to darkening it up a bit for Fall/Winter with a warmer brown.

Clear, Glowing Skin with SheaMoisture Mud Masks

Gail Lewis
@sheamoisture masks review via @agirlsgottaspa In the skin department, Summer usually means oilier than normal skin for me. Which also means clogged pores, and at times, acne prone skin accompanied by dehydrated and irritated skin thanks to time spent in the sun and insane amounts of sunscreen. One of the best ways that I deal with summer skin issues is by relying pretty heavily on face masks.  For me, it's just easier to introduce face masks intended to treat my particular skin woes than to change my entire skincare routine; plus masks always makes an at-home facial feel incredibly indulgent. Two masks that I just recently discovered just in time for summer are the African Black Soap Clarifying Mud Mask and the Raw Shea Butter Hydrating Mud Mask from SheaMoisture.  Mud masks are great for oil absorption, pore-clearing and overall skin detoxification, combined with an ingredient like shea butter which is both hydrating and restorative, SheaMoisture Mud Masks are basically your best skincare weapon against summer skin issues. @sheamoisture african black soap clarifying mud mask review via @agirlsgottaspa @sheamoisture African Black Soap Clarifying Mud Mask review via @agirlsgottaspa I love using the  Hydrating Mud Mask whenever my skin feels dry and dehydrated.  It leaves my skin feeling both moisturized and soothed.  The Clarifying Mud Mask is great for when my skin is clogged thanks to heat, humidity, sweat and sunscreen.  The Clarifying Mud Mask unclogs my pores and leaves my skin feeling smooth and refreshed. @sheamoisture Hydrating Shea Mud Mask review via @agirlsgottaspa shea-butter-mask-review Using these masks on a weekly basis, depending on my skin needs, has enabled me to avoid irritated, clogged, oily, acne prone skin so far this summer! How To Lighten Your Hair #MyOliaStory

Shannon Smyth11 comments

I'm sharing #MyOliaStory as part of a Garnier sponsored series for Socialstars™

How to lighten your hair via @agirlsgottaspa #MyOliaStory #sponsored

Taking your hair color from dark to light is a not something that can be done in a day. Well, at least not when you are doing it on your own at home. You want to be really careful with dyeing your hair so as not to over-process it and cause any damage. When done correctly, you can end up with gorgeous hair at a fraction of the cost at the salon.

You just have to follow directions and need a little patience (enjoy the Guns and Roses earworm.) I have dark brown hair, but I've been wanting to go lighter. Not blonde, but a much lighter brown, because I want to stick with something natural looking that won't contrast with my skin tone in a negative way.

I've made that mistake before. I've dyed my hair red, I've dyed my hair so black that it had hues of blue/purple and I've "frosted" (OMG so 80s) my hair. Red brought out the ruddiness in my skin. Black made me look goth (not my style, but it may be yours) and frosted looked more like I just randomly threw bleach in my hair (i.e. it looked like straw) and made my skin look sallow.

Before You Begin: How to lighten your hair via @agirlsgottaspa #MyOliaStory #sponsored

Have Realistic Expectations:

If you have visions of going from brunette to a bombshell blonde in a matter of an hour, think again - at least if you want it to look as natural as possible. Not to mention, sometimes trying to immediately make a major change can sometimes result in less than optimal results. (Like brassiness, looking more orange than blonde, etc.)

Research Shades in Your Hair Color Range:

First know exactly which shade of brunette you are and the tones to your hair (blonde, golden or red?) While you can look on the side of the box to see a side by side comparison of your natural color and your Garnier Olia result in the store, I recommend going to their Shade Selector on their website instead. It is a better visual to understand where you are at and where you want your hair color to go.

Know it Will Take Time:

Come to terms from the start that this is a process. You want to step down your hair color so that it looks like it lightened naturally, which may take 1-3 applications (over time), 6 weeks apart each time. This will look even more believable when it is the Spring to Summer transition.

Follow Directions:

How many of us skip the instructions and just want to get down to it? Don't rush and don't do overall coloring each time. The first time you use a permanent hair dye, covering your entire head is fine. But each re-application in the weeks to follow should be done at the roots and/or roots for a period of time, then the rest of your hair.
How to lighten your hair via @agirlsgottaspa #MyOliaStory #sponsored

How to Use Garnier Olia to Lighten Your Hair:

Get Set Up Before Starting:

You'll need something to time it, instruction pamphlet, gloves, applicator, developer, colorant, an old towel and a petroleum-like jelly. Wear old clothes. Even though Olia does not drip, there is still human error and you don't want to mess up your clothing. Apply the jelly along your hair line, and back of your neck, and tops of your ears so that color wipes off easily and doesn't stain.

Apply to Your Roots First:

My first application with Olia covered my whole head, but with this application, in order to step down my color some more, I had to apply to my roots first for 28 minutes. Make sure you are in good lighting so that you can see exactly where your roots end. Eat something chocolate while you wait. (Or is that just me?)

Apply Mid-Length to Ends:

Around 27 minutes I began to apply the rest of the Olia ammonia free hair color from mid-length to my ends while not washing out the dye on my roots. I let this sit until the 30 minute mark. I didn't want too huge of a dramatic difference between my roots and the rest of my hair. The top of your head will always be lighter when naturally lightened by the sun, but you don't want it to be all BOOM I colored my hair looking.

Rinse and Apply After Color Conditioner:

Make sure you use lukewarm water to rinse. I probably rinse for a good 3-5 minutes to make sure it is all out. Then apply the After Color Conditioner and leave it on for 2 minutes and rinse again.

Style As Usual:

I never wash my hair for the first 24-48 hours after coloring, so I go light on the hair treatments. Since hair dye plumps up your hair, I don't put in a root lifter for the first few days, just some anti-frizz serum and a little hairspray. I typically curl my hair though because it'll give my hair the look of fullness.
How to lighten your hair via @agirlsgottaspa #MyOliaStory #sponsored
I do have many grays and Garnier Olia has 100% gray coverage. Since it is powered by 60% oil, I also have shiny hair as a result. My first application was with Olia Light Brown 6.0 and this application was Olia Lightest Golden Brown 6 1/2.3 What do you think of the color? Delicious, soft cookie bars topped with citrus marmalade, made with orange, lemon, lime, and grapefruit essences, and of course, topped with sweet, crispy crumble. Citrus Crumble Cookie Bars Recipe from @willcook4smiles using ingredients inspired by @agirlsgottaspa Energizing Citrus scent Hello everyone! It’s so nice to meet all of you, friends of A Girl’s Gotta Spa! I'm Lyuba and I am from Will Cook For Smiles. I am taking over today to show you another sweet way to treat yourself. You already know about spa days, wonderful skin and hair products, but you can’t forget to treat your taste buds and your tummy once in a while too. I'm sure you already know about Shannon's bath and body line intended to pamper you. A Girl's Gotta Spa! products are made with all-natural ingredients, they are purely honest, simple, effective, and made in small batches to ensure the best results. In addition to being perfect for your skin, they are also engaging to your senses. Making your skin beautiful and luscious to the touch, it also engages you with an aromatic citrus scent. Citrus Crumble Cookie Bars Recipe from @willcook4smiles using ingredients inspired by @agirlsgottaspa Energizing Citrus scent This scent is exactly what inspired me to engage more than my senses of touch and smell, but also my sense of taste. Since I didn’t want to bite my arm after applying the Energizing Citrus Body Lotion (good thing my instinct stopped me because I was about to,) I decided to create something inspired by the wonderful scent of these products. After reading the short (and delicious) list of the natural ingredients in these products, I created my own ingredient list, combining all of my favorite citrus fruit. And what a better way to treat yourself than with some simple, soft, and aromatic cookies. We do love some cookies, don't we? So this one is for you, ladies! Immerge yourself in some "delicious" body products after a nice, revitalizing shower and help yourself to some sweet cookie bars! Citrus Crumble Cookie Bars Recipe from @willcook4smiles using ingredients inspired by @agirlsgottaspa Energizing Citrus scent Ingredients: Cookie Layer: ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature ¾ cup brown sugar 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla extract 1¼ cups flour ½ tsp baking soda ¼ tsp salt Citrus Marmalade Layer: 1 – 18 oz. jar of marmalade 3 Tbsp. grapefruit juice Zest from 1 lemon Zest from 1 lime Crumble Layer: ½ cup brown sugar 2 Tbsp. white granulated sugar ¾ cup flour 5 Tbsp. unsalted butter, melted Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 and grease a 9x9 baking dish. (8x8 will work too if you have to use that size.) Cookie: In the bowl of an electric mixer (or using a hand held mixer), cream together butter and sugar for a couple of minutes. Add egg and vanilla and beat until mixed. Lower the speed to low, sift in the flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix the ingredients on low speed until just combined. Spread cookie batter in the baking dish, evenly. Marmalade (can be prepared before starting the cookie layer): Add marmalade into a sauce pot and heat it up over medium heat. Add grapefruit juice, lemon zest, and lime zest. Mix well and simmer, stirring often, for about 10 minutes. Cool to room temperature. Spread citrus marmalade over the cookie layer. Crumble: In a mixing bowl, mix flour, cinnamon, brown and white sugar until evenly incorporated. Pour in melted butter and mix (cut in, not mush) it with a fork, forming coarse crumbles. Spread crumble all over the marmalade, evenly. Bake for 37-40 minutes. Let it cool completely before cutting. Improve Your Brow Game with Chella

Shannon Smyth8 comments
Improve your brow game with @ChellaBeauty via @agirlsgottaspa My brows are sparse and basically non-existent in some spots. They also do this caterpillar ish from years of plucking the wrong way when I was younger. I've considered getting permanent makeup with a brow tattoo, but to be honest, I'm not a fan of needles (which is also the reason I don't think I'll be getting Botox any time soon.) So the next best thing, and really the only option for me, are brow pens, pencils, brow gel and highlighters. Chella recently sent me their Tantalizing Taupe Eyebrow Color Kit, and I was totally on board to give it a try and up my brow game. Improve your brow game with @ChellaBeauty via @agirlsgottaspa Chella's brow kit comes with a pencil sharpener that can sharpen both large and small pencils, Latte Highlighter Pencil, Tantalizing Taupe brow color pencil and brow defining gel. Taupe is a mid-range brown, not too dark and not light. I think it would be a great fit for most brunettes. The brow gel is clear and weightlessly thin. It's not clumpy at all and sometimes I really had to look at the applicator to ensure that there was gel on it. When you apply it, it's not sticky on your brows or even obvious, so your brows look natural. With the brow pencil I was able to fill in color to make my brows look a bit more lush. I also have a scar in one of my brows, and since scars don't grow hair, a brow pencil is the only way to cover it. (You can see it in the before - after picture below.) The Latte highlighter is flesh toned and gives my brows the look of being lifted, which also makes my eye area as a whole look lifted. The products didn't seem to wear off, but were easily removed with makeup remover. Before and after with @ChellaBeauty Tantalizing Taupe Eyebrow Kit via @agirlsgottaspa Click to read the review! Voila! Before and after. I really love the look of my brows from using this kit. It transforms my face. What do you think? Diminish the Look of Fine Lines and Wrinkles #sponsored

Shannon Smyth

Disclosure: Thanks to RoC® Daily Resurfacing Disks, I'm getting taking care of my skin as part of a sponsored post for Socialstars #WomenWhoRoC

roc-anti-aging-skincare Are you looking for a simple way to cleanse and exfoliate your skin all in one beauty product? Do you have fine lines, wrinkles and sun damaged skin? Then you may want to consider the Daily Resurfacing Disks from RoC®. I've been using it daily for the last few weeks and found it an easy product to incorporate into my skin care routine. RoC’s Daily Resurfacing Disks as part of an anti-aging beauty and skin care regimen via @agirlsgottaspa #WomenWhoRoC #sponsored RoC® Daily Resurfacing Disks are gentle enough to be used everyday and are intended to help diminish the look of fine lines (after one week), diminish the signs of photoaging (after 4 weeks) and over time reduce the appearance of wrinkles and pores (12 weeks.) One side of the disk is smooth and the other side is textured with little bumps to exfoliate the skin. The exfoliation isn't rough, but I LOVE using it on my nose and chin area where I have blackheads. I've definitely noticed a difference with my blackheads becoming less noticeable... which means my large pores on my nose are less noticeable because they are not filled with gunk. (Eww.) exfoliating-skin-care The Daily Resurfacing Disks can also be used as a makeup remover, however, I have only used it to remove the makeup on my face and not my eye makeup due to how foamy the disks are. I do use it *around* my eyes, though, where my crows feet are (very carefully.) The disks are self-foaming, but soap free (and oil free, hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic.) They are fragranced, but not any more so than other facial cleasers I've used. skin-care-over-40 In this pic I am not wearing concealer or primer so that you can see just how sun damaged it is. The spots on my nose are not pores, but hyperpigmentation (although I do have large pores, but you can't see them because this stuff works really, really well!) If you read my blog regularly, I am always saying that I am paying for the skin sins of my youth when I didn't wear sunscreen on my face. This is the proof. You guys. Wear sunscreen. I do know that fading sun damage does take some time, especially to the extent that I have it. I'm looking forward to seeing a difference. I haven't used it for 4 weeks yet (just 2.5), so hoping that consistent use will render visible results with that issue. Like I mentioned earlier, I do see a difference in the appearance of my pores due to the exfoliation and the really fine lines have softened a bit due to the moisturizing nature of this product.
